Castilla y León is the largest autonomous community in Spain and sits just north of Madrid. This community is one of the historic kingdoms of Spain that fought in the Reconquista, along with other Iberian kingdoms, to reconquer Iberia from the Moors. It has, like the rest of Spain, been in the middle of a power struggle for centuries, first between Fernando and his brother-in-law Bermundo III of Leon (what a name!), then eventually amongst Fernando’s sons, leading to another battle of power, and so on. It was eventually Alfonso X who established Castilian as the language of education and culture, paving the path for it to become the prominent language in Spain. And would you know it, while researching, I learned that yet another language is apparently spoken in Spain – Leonese. Amazing…I’ve lost count now.
